HARE Motorsport 2016 Winton 300 - Qualifying

Well what a session. Peter completed Practice 2 and when he came in he stated that there was a major issue with the brakes, he had to pump them up at every corner. This seemed strange and although the pumping was working, we were a bit concerned. Due to the quick turn around with qualifying and the fact the car was drive-able, we would diagnose the issue after qualifying.

But during qualifying they got worse until we basically had no brakes, like I said, a very interesting session, a few off track excursions, so not good. We got a few laps in but decided that we had done enough and time to get the car in and find out what was going on.

Session details include:
Fastest Lap Time: 1m 49.1529s
Eclectic Lap Time: 1m 47.031s
Eclectic Gap: 2.1219s (Terrible for consistency)

Division F: 3rd from 5
Outright: 40th from 43

So a bit disappointing with that result, but now the focus was to diagnose this issue and get the car fixed. After an hour of brake bleeding and testing, it was decided that the master cylinder or the proportioning valve had failed. As we didn't have those spares with us, I embarked on a 514km and nearly 6hr round trip to retrieve a master cylinder, master cylinder kit and a replacement proportioning valve, all located back at our Dandenong South Workshop.....

The guys from DKR still had quite a bit of work to do on the MX6, but stayed back until I returned and got the Starlet fixed. It was an awesome effort and at 1am Sunday morning the Starlet was ready.

HARE Motorsport 2016 Winton 300 - Warm Up

Unfortunately on race day we only ended up with the rear view during warm up as something went wrong with the GoPro's and we have no race footage, so that's a bit disappointing.

Now these are the conditions we love, I love racing in the wet (except at Lakeside !!!!!) and the conditions suit the Starlet to a tee.

After DKR installed a master cylinder kit, yes one seal was completely deteriorated, when touching it, it just crumbled, can't believe it as it was a new kit installed in Dec 2014 when we upgrade to the K-Sport 6 pot front calipers, so not sure why it failed, possibly the SRF Brake Fluid we were using so I have been informed ??

So back to the Warm Up, the car felt fantastic, great brakes and with new Yokohama AO50's that have only been through one heat cycle, we had great grip. We were surprised with the lap times and results from the warm up and now looking at having a sensational race. Results for the session are:

Fastest Lap Time: 2m 03.4694s
Eclectic Lap Time: 2m 02.318s
Eclectic Gap: 1.1514s (Not bad for the wet conditions)

Division F: 1st from 5
Outright: 20th from 41

We were 4.2118s quicker than the next Division F race car so we were pumped and ready.

Footnote:

During the race we climbed to 19th from 43 race cars by lap 24 (100 lap race) but unfortunately I had an off track excursion and it took the officials 3 laps to retrieve the race car and coupled with a flat battery (front windscreen heater, wipers, headlights, rain light, alternator could not keep up) we lost valuable time.

We rejoined the track in 30th position and by the time we were ready to complete our compulsory pitstop, we worked our way back up to 20th by lap 56. Unfortunately Peter also had an off track excursion but lost no time and with the race being called early, we didn't get a chance to climb back up the order and finished a respectable 32nd outright and 4th in Division F, oh what might have been if we kept in on the "island".

One thing I can assure you, we will be back in 2017 !

HARE Motorsport 2016 IPRA Nationals - Practice 1

Well now we are back in sprint mode and time to crank the RPM back up to 8500rpm. After having the brakes fixed, we walked away from Winton with only one niggling problem and this was an occasional low coolant pressure warning, race cars !

The first session was good, car felt good and only on back off at the end of the session we had the low coolant pressure warning. We nearly had an off track adventure but saved it before it became a larger issue. Session details include:

Fastest Lap: 2m 02.648s
Eclectic Lap Time: 2m 01.752s
Eclectic Gap: 0.896s

Not a bad start to the weekend, under 1s gap to the theoretical best lap time, but we have been on track quite a bit in this latter part of the year, 3rd event in 4 weeks.

With 6 race cars competing in Class D (0 - 1600cc), we have some great competition with again the Harris Brothers leading the pack with those super quick Suzuki Swift GTi's. And as we all know what it's like with race cars, our weekend is about to get hectic and plagued with problems again.......unreal

HARE Motorsport 2016 IPRA Nationals - Practice 2

Well this session was cut short, only posting an out lap time before the drive belt decided to shred itself and disappear, not good. This is the start of our harmonic issues. We also replaced the radiator cap and our low coolant pressure warnings disappeared.

The only issue we need to be weary about, we got up to 125 degrees before we got back in the pits and think this was the source of our ongoing issues throughout the weekend.

Practice 3 (unfortunately no GoPro footage), we shredded another belt, so we missed Practice 4 while we headed into Cowes to source some belts.

Friday night we analysed the situation and decided to lower the revs to 7000rpm as we didn't experience any harmonic issues at Winton. So Qualifying on Saturday was our test to see if this strategy will work.

HARE Motorsport 2016 IPRA Nationals - Qualifying

Well that was a disaster, travelling around Phillip Island with a 7000rpm limit, so getting used to what gear to be in what corner, all different and tie that in with the traffic and boy oh boy, we have an up hill journey ahead. Session stats include:

Fastest Lap: 2m 05.5785s
Eclectic Lap: 2m 04.135s
Eclectic Gap: 1.4435s

Class D: 6th from 6
U2L Outright: 38th from 39

Still had the pumping out of coolant at the overflow bottle, so looks like we have an issue we are going to have to try and manage.

The surprise out of qualifying were the Harris Brothers with Brad doing a 1m 50.2228s, smashing the Under 1600cc lap record by 2 seconds, but wait, it gets better throughout the weekend, an outstanding effort.

HARE Motorsport 2016 IPRA Nationals - Heat 2

Unfortunately we have no footage from Heat 1. We had a great dice with Bruce Woodward and pipped the VW across the line, bring back memories from 1999 when Bruce and I fought hard for the championship in Class D.

So for Heat 2, we knew we were faster in the corners but Bruce had the straight line speed. Just when we thought we had a nice gap on Bruce, I left some space for Wade to pass at Lukey Heights, lossing some valuable time and then a huge lock up at Honda Corner on the last lap, tie that in with Bruce ripping out his fastest lap of the race on the last lap, Bruce lined me up nicely coming onto the straight and slip streamed me perfectly to beat me by 0.1039s......unreal...... 1 all ! Results and stats for the race include:

Fastest Lap: 2m 03.5257s
Eclectic Lap Time: 2m 01.897s
Eclectic Gap: 1.6287s (Still need to get better)

Class D: 5th from 5
U2L Outright: 30th from 32

Bring on Heat 3, the last one before the U2L Final.

HARE Motorsport 2016 IPRA Nationals - Heat 3

Well what a race, after lapsing in Heat 2 and allowing Bruce Woodward to pip me at the line, the decision was made to go flat out for the hole race, no backing off and the lap times showed that as well:

Lap 1: 2m 19.7464s (Standing Lap)
Lap 2: 2m 02.6823s
Lap 3: 2m 02.8132s
Lap 4: 2m 02.7113s

Now that is consistent. Interesting though is we stayed on the tail of the Robert Wilson Suzuki. The Stats for the Heat are:

Fastest Lap: 2m 02.6823s
Eclectic Lap Time: 2m 01.392s
Eclectic Gap: 1.2903s

Class D: 4th from 6
U2L Outright: 29th from 35

Although the lap times were consistent, the Eclectic Gap is too large, so I still need to get it together, there is still more in the car. Normally by this stage I am down to 0.2s - 0.3s gap, maybe its the 7000rpm limit I placed on the car ?? Not sure.....

Staying with Robert Wilson has now thrown up a problem. We are running around with what appears to be a blown head gasket, but its not giving us huge grief, no overheating with both oil and coolant, no oily gunk under the oil filler cap, but we are loosing a lot of coolant with each race.

With the U2L Final next that is now double the laps we were planning on doing a pitstop mid race to top up the radiator, don't want to loose an engine, but on the other hand with the Brad Harris Suzuki on the trailer and staying with Robert Wilson, I have a chance, slim chance, of securing my third podium in 3 Club Cars / IPRA National Events and to me that is pretty significant.......

HARE Motorsport 2016 IPRA Nationals - U2L Final

Well it now comes down to this and so we have decided to push like mad and try and secure a podium for Class D. Another slow off the line start, trying to protect the ceramic clutch, saw us drop to 5th and with a disastrous first lap and what looks like Robert Wilson having sorted out his issues, that podium faded away into the distance.

By the start of the second lap we rounded up Bruce Woodward, trying some new editing features with the video, and focused on making up lost ground. We pulled off our fastest lap of the weekend on the second lap and as we came around to complete that second lap, right in front of us was William Harris in the Suzuki, we rounded him up but weren't confident of holding 3rd but would try pretty hard.

Will caught back up to us pretty quickly but I wasn't going to give up and we went up over Lukey Heights side by side and I took the inside line into MG Corner. Coming out, Will was lining me up for an over take but to my surprise peeled off into the pits, unbelievable.

As I came down the main straight to start my 4th Lap, there was Bruce Woodward broken down at the exit of pit lane, so that was it, 3rd place secured. We backed off 3 to 4 seconds a lap so the engine would survive and enjoyed the rest of the race, allowing the faster cars plenty of room as my position was not under threat.

We went on to finish the race a secure 3rd position in Class D. Race stats include:

Fastest Lap: 2m 01.9240s
Eclectic Lap Time: 2m 00.027s
Eclectic Gap: 1.897s

Class D: 3rd from 5
U2L Outright: 25th from 33

Although the Eclectic Gap was ordinary, considering the circumstances, our focus was to finish and nurse the car home.

HARE Motorsport has now finished on the podium for Class D in all 3 Nationals we have competed in:

1999 Club Car Nationals: 3rd from 5 (7 Class D competitors entered)
2014 IPRA Nationals: 2nd from 6
2016 IPRA Nationals: 3rd from 5 (6 Class D competitors entered)

After a crazy 2016, we finally finish our final event for 2016 on the podium. Looking at a specification change for 2017 and reverting back to the 4EFE 1.3L, we are looking forward to 2017.

Although not an IPRA race, the DKR Eunos 30X has certainly competed at IPRA events, HARE Motorsport takes the Eunos 30X (in production format) to the Australian Production Car Series (APCS) Round 1 for the Phillip Island 4hr, formally known as the Great Southern 4hr.

With 2016 now behind us and not sure if the APCS Round 1 - Phillip Island 4hr was ever shown on Speedweek, it’s time to get some in car footage out there. As always, the focus will be on myself and not my co-driver.

We didn't get out in Practice 1 while car preparations were finalised and in Practice 2, Phil Kirkham went out to give the car a shake down and after only one lap, the session was red flagged.

So Practice 3 saw the first time I was at the wheel of the DKR Eunos 30X and it was wet, great. Very tricky conditions but just took my time to learn the car. Session stats include:

Fastest Lap: 2m 17.1582s
Class E: 2nd from 6
Outright: 14th from 21

HARE Motorsport 2016 APCS Round 1 - Qualifying

A nice dry session for qualifying. A little messy at the start as I was still learning the DKR Eunos 30X. We completed 14 laps, more than any of the IPRA races we compete in, so a long session that gave me plenty of seat time. As for my co-driver, well that was unknown at this point in time.

Sensationally when we got back to parc ferme, I was informed that we had secured the Class E Pole Position. Was extremely happy with the result, looking forward to the main event. Session stats include:

Fastest Lap: 1m 57.8519s
Class E: 1st from 6
Outright: 15th from 21

2016 HARE Motorsport APCS Round 1 - 4hr Race Moment #1

Well its 4 hours of racing, so at this stage not planning on producing a 4 hour video. Therefore we are going to produce a series of key moments from the race, but again focusing on myself and not my co-driver.

So here we are for the main race and the Class E Pole sitter has to start from pit lane, unreal. The GT race before us went over time and we were informed that our race had a delayed start so even though we were getting ready, there was no rush. Then all of a sudden the officials stated we were going to start on time and you had like 2 minutes to get out of pit lane. What a disaster, we just didn't make it.........

A spirited drive from last to first in Class E after having started from pit lane in the opening stint.

I was annoyed as hell and made my intentions clear while waiting in pit lane and for the race to start. Flew out of the pits on cold tyres and cold brakes, awesome. Well if we are going to win this thing, it will be from pit lane, nothing like a challenge I say.

The key was to get into a rythum as it is a long race and importantly, be patient.

And so after making all that ground up, we made a massive tactical error. Although our race plan included an early stop, we came into the pits after 28m 45s, 1m and 15s early, can you believe that.

We had a communications error with something going wrong with the two way radio, boy we really want to make this venture hard ! This will be an excellent learning curve, first time HARE Motorsport is participating in a full blown endurance race and the first time DKR running a two car entry. Lets hope this is the last of the hiccups.......

HARE Motorsport 2016 APCS Round 1 - 4hr Race Moment #4

DKR / HARE Motorsport complete their Compulsory Pit Stop (CPS). We will be stopping again, but we only have one CPS to complete.

Very smooth stop and you can hear the rear tailgate shut (re-fueling) just as Maddie is ready to go out, so an excellent stop with no time delays or hold ups. Top job.

But as you can hear, we have no radio comms, big issue, so we just have to deal with it as best as we can.

HARE Motorsport 2016 APCS Round 1 - 4hr Race Moment #5

Well Maddie done a great job and certainly had a handful of her own moments. Maddie got the first of the rain and it made the track incredibly slippery, leading to moments that included spinning at the Southern Loop, Brake Lock Ups at Honda Corner and MG and then nearly getting run off the track by the Searle/Morris BMW that went on to win the race outright.

Unfortunately though Maddie had a huge off coming onto the straight in the slippery conditions. After getting towed back to the pits, DKR got in and repaired the radiator surge bottle and got her back out, marvelous job by DKR to keep us running.

Maddie came in for the final pit stop under green conditions and this was certainly a super stop, I was in the car and belted up before the re-fueling was completed.

Now its time to play catch up and see what we can do on the run home.......
