New Cars for 2017

Post by TwinTurbo » Sun Dec 11, 2016 8:21 am

Well the 2016 season is over and didn't it go fast :shock:
So it's time for the 2017 thread, are you building a new car or refurbishing an existing one? This is the place to talk about it, share some stories and pictures, even entice others to have a go at the best category in Australian Motorsport.

I've kicked the 2017 Thread off with some quotes from the 2016 Thread.

Cheers
Gary

Cutting unnecessary brackets out, interior stripped ready for dry icing, and doing some work on the front end all at once... Need more hours in the day. Im also on the lookout for a cheap Hilux/Hiace diff but I can be patient - no rush.

Thanks Gary,
It's a slow process, and I don't get as much time to work on it as I would like. Still aiming to get on track with as little a budget as possible. Will only be a gridfilla, but will be fun. Lot's of good guys to race with here in WA

Will certainly be giving you a call.
Looking forward to getting back amongst the action!

Baby steps. I steal whatever time I can to work on it, in between various other commitments, and without risking my kids hating me and my wife divorcing me... that usually means a few hours on a weekend, and an hour or so a couple of nights each week.

This weekend:

* Fuel tank stripped (mostly - still a bit to go and need to clean bitumen residue off underside - hard to find a decent rubber gasket for the sender too so will have to make an e85-ready gasket from Viton)
* Finished removing side intrusion bars - bitch of a job without hacking up the inside of the door - 12-13kg reclaimed)
* Rough-mounted strut tubes with new rotors to establish indicative front track, so guide rear end build.

Next week, and in the lead up to Xmas:

* Finish stripping/painting fuel tank - it is remarkably clean inside so sticking with OEM tank for now, will run surge/pump setup out of my old race car
* Get LSD diff centre mounted up with new (secondhand) ring/pinion (thanks Duane) and new bearings/pinion seal
* Get an old worn set of A050s mounted on my new race wheels, to guide suspension setup and wheel arch flaring
* Get cracking on top mount pedal box (still waiting for master cylinders to arrive)
* Make caliper brackets for front brakes

Early new year:

* Seam weld
* Reinforce front strut towers
* Cage
* Rear end build

Is a CroMoly cage worth the cost/effort?

Anticipating its first run next week with the standard engine, installation laps basically, just to see what stays on, what falls off, what works and what doesn't. Should be interesting 8)
My guess is Justin will put up some "in build" pictures after its first race :wink:

Cheers

Hope its ready for 2017. Whilst working on it last weekend I saw the roll cage plate and it was dated early 2014 confirmed how slack I have been :-(

I've started to work on my AU Falcon build again. Hoping to get really stuck into it after my wedding in March.

So far gutted the interia and wiring, most the cage is done. Had started to rewire it when it was broken into and the ecu was stilen along with tools etc.

IRS or LRA?
You should consider insurance for the race car and tools, thieves often come back to steal the new stuff. I use Shannons and it's not expensive.

Happy New year

LRA. I know the car won't be much more than mid pack at best but I will enjoy every second of it.

Car isn't out the front anymore. Have in the workshop so its covered by my business cover now.

LRA and double wishbone front end is a very good option for IP. IP rules really suit LRA.

Good to know Steve. I'm staying 4ltr which is why i think mid field at best would be a great result for the car.
