Is there another way around???

I give Melbourne a miss, turn left of the M31 onto the M80 at Campbellfield, then turn right onto the 46, past Heidelberg, then turn left on the 40, right on the 52 and then left onto the M3, follow that all the way to big interchange onto the the M1. Sounds complex, but it saves about half an hour, so fire up the SatNav.

Hi 3sgem,

To avoid the CBD you will need an Etag (Sydney ones work in Melbourne) or buy a Eastlink daypass.

Here is the Route:

When approaching Melbourne coming down the M31 Hume Hwy.

- Take M80 Metropolitan Ring Road off ramp to head East

- TL at the end of the M80 Ring Rd onto Route 44 Lower Plenty Road

- TL onto Route 40 Banksia Street

- TR onto Route 52 Bulleen Rd

- TL onto Thompsons Rd then immediately Right onto the M3 Eastern Fwy
This becomes the Eastlink Toll way at Springvale Road which is why you need the ETag.

- Take M1 Monash Fwy off-ramp after Police Road

- Continue along M1 Monash Fwy direction Warrigal

- Take C422 Koo Wee Rup Road off-ramp and take 3rd exit at round-about to head South though secound round-about to Koo Wee Rup

- Follow Koo Wee Rup By-Pass signs

- TL onto M420 South Gippsland/Bass Hwy to head East to Phillip Island.
